What is Massage Therapy?

Massage is a hand’s on healing art that has been practiced for thousands of centuries. Although most people are familiar with the relaxation aspects that a Massage treatment has to offer, massage is really far more than just a tool for relaxation, massage is really a medical practice and a tool used for physical therapy.

Massage therapy is a type of healing art in which a trained and certified medical professional, (usually in matters of anatomy and traditionally known as a masseur (male) or a masseuse (female)), manipulates the soft tissues of a persons body. They basically manipulate the connective tissues, the tendons, the ligaments and the skin, applying varying degrees of pressure and using specific bodily movement to ease any tension and pain experienced within the muscle of the persons head, body, arms, legs, hands or feet.

How does Massage Therapy work?

In a professional setting, whether at home or a business, clients can be treated in various ways; either lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a floor mat on the floor. In less professional settings, flat surfaces like a bed or the floor without a floor mat is also acceptable.

Techniques used by Massage Therapists vary, but is commonly applied with hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearms, feet, or some kind of a device.  Because a massage has to do with direct human intervention and there are people who are sensitive when it comes to their bodies, it is expected of a Therapist to create a safe and comfortable environment for their client/s. This will either be done with some soft music and or the burning of some incense or candles to create a peaceful and calm environment.

Once the room has been prepared, the Therapist will then ask the patient to ready him or herself and then ask the patient to lie down on the table, either face down or on their backs. Once on the table a towel or small blanket will be placed over the patient to cover any exposed areas and also to keep the patient warm and comfortable.

Depending on the type of massage used for the treatment the therapist will then focus themselves on the patient’s body and then almost sub-consciously connect with the person’s energetic field. Once ready the Therapist will then begin to do their work.

Whether doing a full body massage or only a specific area, the Therapist will usually begin to warm up and prepare the area they will be working on. 

Once the muscle/s has been warmed up, various techniques will then be used to stretch and manipulate the muscle/s to release the tension and regulate the blood flow within the muscle. A session usually last anything from 30 min to 1 hour 30 min) at a time.

On completion of the treatment, the therapist will usually ask the patient to stay lying down for a few more minutes.  This is a very important healing time for the patient, as this short rest allows the patients body to reset and energize the areas worked on. When ready, the patient will get off from the table, get dressed and prepare to leave.

There is a great deal of benefits that comes with regular massage treatments. Massage is a highly effective practice for reducing symptoms of disorders or pain in the muscles and the nervous system and is generally considered part of complementary and integrative medicine.

 Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension. Massage therapy is even recommended to help people cope with the pain and stress of cancer, heart disease, stomach problems, fibromyalgia and it's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations...
